What is a Defibrillator?

A defibrillator is a life-saving medical device designed to restore a normal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest. When the heart stops beating effectively, a defibrillator delivers a controlled electric shock to the heart, helping to reset its rhythm. These devices are crucial in emergencies, as they can significantly increase the chances of survival if used promptly. Defibrillators are simple to operate, often providing step-by-step voice instructions, making them accessible even to those without medical training. Their presence in public places is vital, as every minute without intervention reduces the chances of survival by 10%.

Transforming Access to Life-Saving Defibrillators in South Yorkshire

According to Yorkshire Ambulance there were less than 10 external defibrillators available to the public in the whole of South Yorkshire when the charity was set up in 2013.  Over the last 11 years we have been able to support over 190 communities both in Rotherham and further afield to install this vital life-saving equipment. 

Our work now is solely in our home town and although people are beginning to spot the green or yellow cabinets popping up around the borough we won’t be satisfied until everyone in Rotherham has a unit in their neighbourhood. 

A defibrillator is the only device which can reset the heart with the hope of returning to its normal rhythm.  If a cardiac arrest occurs time is of the essence and for every minute that elapses without CPR or defibrillation there is a reduction of 7-10% chance of survival. 

The Urgent Need for Public Defibrillators

Each year, approximately 30,000 people in the UK suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospitals. The urgency of immediate treatment cannot be overstated—chances of survival decline by about 10% for every minute of delay without CPR or defibrillation. However, when defibrillation is administered promptly, the survival rate can be as high as 75%. These statistics highlight the critical need for increased access to public defibrillators, ensuring that life-saving intervention is available when and where it’s needed most.

You will be given the code for an external cabinet if there is one within 600 metres and there is someone available to go for it

Never leave the patient alone but begin CPR immediately while waiting for the paramedics or ambulance to arrive
