What is a Guardian?
A Guardian is a dedicated individual responsible for the upkeep and monitoring of a defibrillator installation. This role involves:
- Registering the Installation: The Guardian agrees to register the defibrillator online with The Circuit, providing details such as the serial number and the expiry date of the electronic pads.
- Regular Checks: Every two weeks, the Guardian performs a visual inspection to ensure all indicators are functioning correctly.
- Monitoring and Maintenance: The Guardian keeps track of the AED pad expiry dates and arranges for replacements when the pads are out of date, the battery is low, or after the pads have been used.
- Reporting Issues: If the cabinet is inaccessible or the defibrillator is not functioning, the Guardian informs The Circuit and logs back on once the equipment is ready for emergencies again.
- Point of Contact: The Guardian serves as the primary contact for The Circuit regarding the installation.
The Guardian should ideally live locally to ensure the role is not burdensome and appoint a delegate if they are away, informing the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) of this arrangement.

The Circuit is a national database managed by the British Heart Foundation and its associates. It plays a crucial role in connecting defibrillators across the country, ensuring they are registered and maintained effectively. By registering a defibrillator with The Circuit, you:
- Ensure Accessibility: Provide crucial information about the defibrillator’s location and status, making it accessible in emergencies.
- Maintain Readiness: Keep track of the defibrillator’s operational status, ensuring it is always ready for use.
- Facilitate Communication: Serve as a point of contact for updates and maintenance, ensuring timely interventions when needed.
